Policies

Submission Guidelines

The Ingleside Light encourages letters and guest essays from readers.

Letters

Letters should be no longer than 250 words and include the authors name, home address and telephone number. No anonymity or pseudonymity. Letters are edited for accuracy, clarity and length. Publication of letters occurs once per month.

Guest Essays

The Ingleside Light will publish guest essays that are relevant, provocative, constructive and timely.

All submissions for publication in the Ingleside Light must be accompanied by your full name, your mailing address, and your day phone. No anonymity.

Submission length must be between 600 – 650 words. Photographs or graphics may be included. Links (URLs, not headlines or footnotes) to back up quotes and factual material must be included. Any person mentioned must be identified by their real, full name. A short biography — two sentences at most — of the author to run at the end of the submission must be included.

Only pieces that are submitted exclusively to The Ingleside Light will be considered. Material that has been published elsewhere on blogs, social media or other publications will not be considered. Rebuttals to guest essays published in The Ingleside Light should be submitted as letters to the editor, not as full-length pieces.

Authors may post their pieces elsewhere 48 hours after they are published in The Ingleside Light. By submitting a piece and agreeing to its publication, authors are granting exclusive rights to the piece to The Ingleside Light for 48 hours and non-exclusive rights thereafter.

Editorial Independence

Being an advertiser, sponsor or paid subscriber to The Ingleside Light does not in any way empower or entitle that individual or organization to dictate or control what articles or content are produced by The Ingleside Light, or to have oversight, approval or direction of articles or other content. The Ingleside Light welcomes input, feedback and criticism from all.

Corrections and Updates

The Ingleside Light is committed to being accurate and will respond in a timely fashion to any claim that its publication presents an inaccurate fact or invades a right of privacy. If a reader or subject of a story believes that some statement is inaccurate or otherwise actionable, that person can request a correction by sending a request to the publisher.

Within a reasonable time, our editor will carefully review any potential inaccuracy and decide whether an article needs to be corrected or modified in some other way. The Ingleside Light has developed relationships with experienced media counsel, who are available for consultation on an immediate and as needed basis.

In the event of a minor factual error, the story will be amended, and the change will be noted at the bottom. Significant corrections will be noted in the headline or at the top of the story. If new details or clarifications are added to a story after its publication, our practice is to include a note describing the update at the end of the piece.

The Ingleside Light is also committed to protecting its intellectual property and respects that interest when it receives a demand to remove content based on intellectual property rights of others. When necessary, these requests are referred to experienced media counsel for evaluation and consultation. When necessary, removal of content or other remedies may be suggested. In any event, the requester will receive a response in a timely fashion.

Pre-Publication Review

The Ingleside Light believes that reporters and editors should have the freedom to hold the powerful accountable. When an article involves sensitive subjects, The Ingleside Light has relationships with organizations that provide pro bono pre-publication review or refers the matter out to a law firm with significant media law experience. Any article that the editors consider sensitive will be referred to that organization for review.
