A Balboa Park booster group has received its wish.
Friends of Balboa Skatepark's proposal for a major renovation of Balboa Parkโs 10,500-square-foot skatepark is one of seven projects selected for funding through the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department's Community Opportunity Fund.
Each project will get $500,000 to $1.5 million of a $6 million allocation from the 2020 Health and Recovery Bond.
Representatives from Friends of Balboa Skatepark and Friends of Balboa Park, which have banded together to fix up the park, did not respond to requests for comment by press time.
Improvements for the skatepark include replacement of deteriorated wood features with durable concrete terrain, new fencing and enhanced seating areas, according to an announcement.

โWith these seven projects, we are listening to communities and creating safer, more welcoming gathering spaces in the neighborhoods that make San Francisco special," Mayor Daniel Lurie said in a statement.
Rec and Park received 36 applications. A selection committee of city staff and community partners scored the proposals based on alignment with community needs.
โThe Community Opportunity Fund is helping ensure that San Franciscoโs parks continue to reflect the needs and dreams of the communities that use them every day,โ Rec and Park General Manager Sarah Madland said in a statement. โThese are community-driven projects, shaped by the people who know and love these spaces best, and the enthusiasm behind them shows how much our parks mean to San Franciscans.โ
The projects will now enter design development and environmental review.
