SFMTA To Upgrade 2 More M-Ocean View Boarding Islands
The work on the San Jose Avenue stops is expected to be completed by the end of December.
The work on the San Jose Avenue stops is expected to be completed by the end of December.
Work crews will rebuild two M-Ocean View light rail line boarding islands on San Jose Avenue starting Thursday.
As part of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency's M-Ocean View Transit & Safety Project quick-build safety upgrades, the century-old streetcar route will get wider and longer stops at the intersection of San Jose and Lakeview avenues.
Public Works crews will also improve existing curb ramps at the corners of the intersection to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
"We expect construction on each island to last approximately 10-12 days," the transportation agency said in an announcement. "We expect construction to take place between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. every day."
The work on the inbound stop is scheduled for Dec. 4 to Dec. 16. The outbound stop work is scheduled for Dec. 17 to Dec. 29.
"Getting on and off Muni safely was a common concern riders shared with us during project outreach," the agency said in an announcement. "From 2017-2022, an average of two people per year were hit by cars while getting on or off the M Ocean View in the project area."
The M-Line will continue to operate during construction, but riders will have to use nearby stops. The M has about 20,000 daily boardings, down from 30,000 before the pandemic.
Rebuilding the boarding islands will cost the removal of a total of four street parking spaces.

The transportation agency is upgrading K Ingleside boarding islands as well. Only one island has yet to be rebuilt.
