San Francisco Police Department Capt. Brien Hoo has been promoted to commander and will be leaving Taraval Station to lead the airport division on July 5.
"Serving as your captain at Taraval Station has been one of the highlights of my career," Hoo wrote in a farewell note. "[...] I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the support, collaboration, and genuine trust that you’ve extended to me over the last 21 months."
Hoo was raised in the Taraval district, which encompasses much of the city's westside.
"I grew up here in the Taraval district, and I still have strong roots in the Sunset, with close friends and family who continue to call this community home," Hoo wrote. "It’s more than a place I’ve served; it’s where my values were shaped and my commitment to public service began."
Hoo led the station during a time of severe understaffing and falling crime rates. However, public safety issues remainder, notably scams and quality of life crimes.
In his farewell, Hoo thanked community leaders, namely fellow military veteran Bill Barnickel of the Outer Sunset Merchants and Professionals Association, along with the District 4, 7 and 11 supervisors and their staffs for partnering on public safety initiatives.
Hoo also thanked his fellow officers for their "professionalism, resilience and commitment."
"You are the steady force that keeps our neighborhoods safe and our values strong," Hoo wrote. "Thank you for letting me be a part of your lives and for making Taraval feel like family."
