🟧 Historic District Delay // New Station Captain
Plus: We catch up with the honorable Rev. Glenda Hope.
It's that time again when San Francisco Police Department brass moves around station captains.
Ingleside Station's monthly community meeting was standing-room only for San Francisco Police Department Capt. Amy Hurwitz's last time hosting on Tuesday, July 15.
Hurwitz, who made international headlines during her two-year stint, was transferred to Southern Station, which is located in the department's headquarters building on Third Street. There, she can use her skills managing large event security at Chase Center and the like.
"I'm really going to miss everybody here," Hurwitz said. "I'm going to miss the support that the community gives to me and to the officers at the station, and they're really tremendous. I've never seen anything like it."
Officer Alexis Dedet presented Hurwitz with a card signed by the station's officers and everyone in the meeting. Nubia Mendoza from the Mayor’s Office presented Hurwitz with a certificate in recognition of her service. Mendoza, who has gone to all of the police station meetings, said that Ingleside Station's is the best attended of them all.
In turn, Hurwitz gave her final Rose Ann Harris Good Neighbor Award to Joelle Kenealey. Kenealey, head of the Outer Mission Merchants and Residents Association, has served on the station's Community Police Advisory Board for years.
Newly promoted Capt. Gerry Newbeck is now in command of the station, which is responsible for much of the greater Ingleside neighborhood. (The rest is covered by Taraval Station, which has a new captain in Clayton Harmston.)
Newbeck was on hand to greet the community at the meeting. He said he's been with SFPD for 26 years, and his last assignment was at Northern Station, where he was the like work captain for eight months. Aside from Northern, he's been assigned to the Airport, Central, Southern, Bayview and Park stations. He has experience on patrol, the SWAT team and investigations.
"I have a good working knowledge, and I know a lot of people in this department that I can reach out to if I ever need anything for Ingleside and the community here," Newbeck said, adding that he helped train Hurwitz when she was a recruit at Tenderloin Station.
Ingleside Station's next public event is National Night Out, which will be held at the station on Aug. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m.
We deliver neighborhood news, events and more every Thursday.
