The San Francisco Police Department arrested a suspect in the fatal stabbing of a man who was with a child at the intersection of Junipero Serra Boulevard and Ocean Avenue, an official said.

The incident was reported at 4:38 p.m. on Wednesday. The incident occurred near Commodore Sloat Elementary School and several after-school programs, spurring wide alarm. Police responded to the scene and rendered aid to the victim suffering from life-threatening injuries until paramedics could take him to the hospital. On Thursday, police announced the victim had died and the Homicide Detail would take over the case.

Through the course of an investigation, police identified the suspect as 42-year-old Daniel Patrick Rodriguez Jr. Shortly before 9 a.m. Friday morning, police arrested Rodriguez in Tuolumne County on the charge of murder, according to a news release. District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar first told The Light that police made an arrest.

Melgar said, in a statement, that she requested increased security in the area. The heightened security will be lifted today.

Melgar secured from the school district social and mental health support for Sloat students, families and staff. She also pledged to do everything she can to deploy more resources to ensure the safety of residents.

"Victims' Services have also been dispatched to support the individual victims and their families," Melgar's statement read. "I want to express my deep sadness for the families impacted and gratitude to the first responders."

Another fatal stabbing occurred nearby on Ocean Avenue in late July. On Sept. 8, there was an unprovoked stabbing on a streetcar trundling through West Portal, which is still under investigation.
