The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency is renovating a boarding island for the inbound M Ocean View light rail line and building a new boarding island for the 43 Masonic bus line.
The M Ocean View boarding island, located at San Jose and Geneva avenues, will be longer and wider. Riders will no longer have to step from or onto the street.
"This new boarding island will make riding the M Ocean View safer and more accessible," the SFMTA said in an announcement. "In a later phase of construction, we will add a new wheelchair-accessible ramp to the new island."
Instead of a wheelchair ramp like many other ADA-compliant boarding islands, the island had a small elevator.
The project is part of the J Church and M Ocean View Transit and Safety Improvements.
No parking spaces were removed to lengthen the boarding island.

Frida Kahlo Way
The SFMTA is also installing a boarding island along Frida Kahlo Way in front of City College of San Francisco's Student Success Center for the 43 Masonic bus.
Construction, which had a June 30 anticipated start date, includes excavation in the roadway, concrete pouring and traffic striping. The project timeline is seven to 10 days, according to an announcement from City College.
The boarding island is wrap-up work for the Frida Kahlo Way Quick-Build project. Beyond the boarding island, the SFMTA will also lengthen the existing bikeway to Ocean Avenue. Both were delayed by City College's Student Success Center construction, according to the SFMTA.
"The SFMTA plans to conduct a follow-up, focused evaluation in fall 2026 to ensure these changes are working as intended," the agency said in an announcement.
